About Alexa Machikas
“PIVOT” – Ross Geller, Friends
I was born and raised in a small town south of Atlanta, GA. My grandparents owned a 100+ acre farm and I grew up around tons of animals, family, and good ole southern cooking. My family moved to the Lake Norman area of NC when I was older and then we packed up and moved to Oak Island, NC just before I started high school. Beach life was a pretty amazing thing to experience though I definitely took it for granted at the time (2-hour long bus rides one way will do that you). After high school, I moved to Chapel Hill to start my college education at UNC Chapel Hill. After about 12 major/minor changes, I finally landed on a double major in Psychology and Anthropology with a minor in Medical Anthropology. I have lived in the Triangle area of NC ever since. I currently reside in Apex, NC with my husband and our dog and cat.
Academic Background:
B.A. Psychology and Anthropology, minor in Medical Anthropology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Interests:
Reading, dogs, cats, farm animals (particularly goats), local bookstores, baking, podcasts, and true crime (shows, series, books, podcasts, etc).
How would your friends describe you?
Loyal, Dependable, Kind, and the “Mom” of the group.
What is one important skill every person should have?
I think everyone should be a server/waiter at least once in their life. It teaches you so many valuable skills, but most importantly it gives you a thick skin and teaches you that you cannot always please everyone so as long as you’re putting forth your best effort, that’s all that truly matters.
What are your favorite hobbies outside of work?
I love to read – On any given day, I typically am reading an eBook, physical book and listening to an audio book concurrently. The more stories the better. Audiobooks are for down time or chores around the house, eBooks for my kindle to read before I go to bed and physical books are usually my comfort rereads that I can stowaway in a bag. Baking is also comforting to me. If I had a bad day, I bake some cookies. If I had a great day, I bake cookies. I love making food for my friends/fam – blame my super southern grandma for always pushing food on everyone who ever entered her home!
